Keeping Balance During the Recession – Don’t Let Your Relationship Suffer

The biggest problem the recession has brought to so many people has been loss of balance. The loss of a job, the reduction of a paycheck or the reduction of work hours has many people so focused on how to make ends meet that other areas of their lives suffer.

To be happy and fulfilled in our lives, it is essential to have balance. Even when difficulties arise in a specific area of our lives. We must maintain our physical health, our financial health, our spiritual health, our emotional health and the health of our relationships. Too much focus on any one area will cause all of the other areas to suffer.

All of us have areas that are easier to focus on than others. For example, if you are in fabulous shape, that is an area that is easy for you to focus on. But have you ever noticed that you can sometimes get so focused on your exercise and nutrition programs that you neglect a relationship? Exercise and nutrition are meant to enhance the other areas of our lives, not take them over. The same is true for every other area of our lives. When we are in balance, each area enhances our life.

Think about your financial health. In this aspect, I’ve been guilty from time to time of over-focusing on financial goals to the exclusion of my physical health and family relationships. But tell me, what good does it do to be financially secure if I lose my health and my relationships in the process? Then what? Do I go back to focusing on physical health and relationships and let the financial goals go? Do you know anyone who has financial success but have absolutely terrible relationships? It’s a result of lack of balance.

Especially in this time when you might be feeling some panic about financial security, it is very important to remember balance. If you focus too much on one area and neglect the others, you could lose everything! In fact, according to the article by Keren Blankfeld of Forbes, divorce statistics rise during a down economy.

So, here is my advice for preventing financial difficulty from becoming the beginning of the end for you.

1. First step: Take inventory of where you and your family are right now. Sit down and talk with your partner about where you each think you are. Ask each other questions like:

*Do you think we are on the same page financially?

*What do you think about our spiritual health as a couple?

*How are we doing in terms of our physical health and what do we need to adjust so that our physical health contributes to our overall good instead of taking away from it.

*Are we spending enough time together?

*What plans can we make to maintain balance even during this time that we are struggling to figure out howto make ends meet financially?

2. The second step: Do something about your conversation. Make small changes that make a big difference. Go fora walk. Clear your heads. Right now, there might be aspects of your financial life that are outside of your control. But you can focus on what is in your control. Maintaining balance is certainly is. When you have balance, you are also much more open to new ideas about how to bring new sources of revenue into your life.

You may find some very interesting results from a simple conversation. Just as an example, I recently had a conversation something like what I’m suggesting you do with my husband. We weren’t on the same page because of his belief that I wasupset with him for being unemployed. He is an electrician and has been out of work — like so many construction workers are right now.

Our conversation did several things for us. It corrected his perception that I was upset about the job. It helped him understand where I need his support emotionally while I make up the difference in our finances. It helped him understand that I still value him in our relationship whether or not he is currently employed. It set us back on course working together as a team.

Sometimes it really is true that when struggles begin, each person continues with their own perceptions and nobody talks about it. Just sit down today and have a conversation that starts with “Where do you think we are?” and moves through each area I’ve listed. Even if you think everything is fine, it’s a great way to check in and find potential problem areas before they become a problem. By focusing on balance, you can maintain your family and your closest relationships no matter what the recession does. And in the end, isn’t that what is most important?

Before I close, I just want to say a few things about hope. Hope is the feeling that comes from the belief that life can get better. I am in the business of helping people find hope. What I have seen is that when two people stop talking and simply allow their perceptions and beliefs to grow without verifying them or correcting them through communication, hope dies. Connection brings hope. In my business, as I’ve watched hope come alive in people’s eyes I have gained renewedcommitment to helping people restore hope. Hope is what happens just before you gain the courage to make significant change in your life.

Even in this economy, hope is still available. Financial success isn’t reserved for the educated or sophisticated. It is for those who have a burning desire and keep their hope alive. You can discover the joy of developing financial success. Remember to maintain balance. Remember to keep your lines of communication open.
